ABOUT US

We are familiar with the difficulties that candidates face when it comes to preparing for the DOHNS OSCE, MRCS (ENT) and FRCS (ORL-HNS) Section 2 examinations. There are numerous revision courses available but they provide little detail on what is important to bridge the gap between theory and practice for examination success. Our revision courses are entirely based upon the need for delegates to pass. We provide the essential tips and tricks, which are not given elsewhere or found in any books. Currently, we offer the only revision course for the Section 1 MCQ part of the FRCS (ORL-HNS) examination. We also offer trainee development courses, i.e., Portfolio and ENT ST3 preparation events. We have kept pace with the developments in the DOHNS and FRCS Otolaryngology postgraduate examinations, unlike the traditional lecture-based courses which have not responded to the recent changes. Our ENT revision courses are unique in that they provide candidates with a very realistic OSCE / mock exam experience. We select only questions which resemble closely those asked in the real tests. Following each mock examination, we carry out a detail dissection of each question to stimulate learning of the salient concepts. This retrograde approach to the acquisition of knowledge has proven to be very popular with past students and is probably responsible for our excellent pass rates and highly favourable feedback thus far. ENT TZAR was founded so that any surplus income could be easily accessible for educational, teaching and training purposes within our ENT Departments. We will also be funding two annual awards, available to members of the faculty, to subsidise Clinical Observerships at distinguished institutions.

PUBLICATIONS

Viva Guide in ENT Surgery: The traffic light approach - £59.99
Ricardo AP Persaud, Owen Judd, Yogesh M Bhatt, Julian A Gaskin, Samuel C Leong, Paul Chatrath.
Foreword by Professor Anthony Narula, MA FRCS.
Published: 2 Oct 2014 382 pages ISBN: 9781784560874

Viva Guide in ENT Surgery: The traffic light approach is the first book to be written in the format of Section 2 of the UK Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination (FRCS ORL-HNS). During the viva, the examiner starts with an introductory question (here colour-coded green) followed by one or more competency question(s) (colour-coded amber) and finally one or more advanced question(s) (colour-coded red).
This guide book covers the spectrum of topics in the syllabus pertaining to Otology & Neuro-otology, Rhinology & Facial Plastics, Paediatric ENT and Head & Neck Surgery. At the beginning, all of the ‘pass/fail’ Paediatric ENT emergencies are highlighted. Familiarization with the 119 clinical cases presented will not only enhance your knowledge of key subjects in Otolaryngology, but also help to develop strategies to systematically decipher any rare esoteric questions, when under the stress of examination or interview. Whilst this book is primarily aimed at Senior ENT Trainees, any clinicians interested in a concise compendium of modern ENT practice and a fresh unique approach to understanding Clinical Otorhinolaryngology will also find it rewarding. It may also be worth noting that additional well-illustrated questions, answers and succinct explanations of 62 different clinical cases, plus a separate chapter on clinical audiology, are available in the ENT Tzar DO-HNS and MRCS (ENT) OSCE Guide – below.

Urgent Care Guide in Otolaryngology: A 5-Step Approach - £21.99
Ricardo Persaud, Sean Fang, Maha Khan, Eugene Wong, Yogesh Bhatt. Foreword by Professor Ram Dhillon.
Published: 14 Mar 2014 230 pages ISBN: 9781780357591

Ear, Nose and Throat surgery is a specialty that is often inadequately covered in Medical Schools worldwide and very few junior doctors encounter it during foundation training or internship. As a result, there is always a sense of anxiety and a feeling of entering the unknown when junior doctors, such as core surgical trainees, GP trainees, Foundation and Emergency doctors see patients with ENT conditions requiring urgent care. Currently, there is no concise guide book to address this fundamental issue without subjecting the reader to hours and hours of trawling through lengthy didactic text. With this in mind, and utilising the principles of Pointillism, the authors have put together an excellent succinct guide.
The book is divided into five chapters, each consisting of urgent care conditions pertaining to (1) Ear, (2) Nose and Bronchus, (3) Throat and Oesophagus, (4) Neck and Head or (5) Complications of Treatment. All the essential information is clearly provided in 5 logical management steps: history, examination investigation(s), treatment and follow-up. Additional relevant points, tables and figures are provided to further enhance your understanding and retention of the subject matter. Like the previous two books from ENT TZAR team, this guide is lavishly illustrated with clinical photographs to optimise learning and confidence to deal with the challenges of managing urgent care conditions in Otolaryngology.

DO-HNS and MRCS (ENT) OSCE Guide: Revision notes for Otolaryngology - £44.99
Ricardo Persaud, Wai Sum Cho, Antonia Tse, Konstantinos Argiris & Henry Pau. Foreword by Professor Antony Narula.
Published: 9 Aug 2013 445 pages ISBN: 9781780356570

This revision guide offers the most up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the essential information relevant to passing the DO-HNS/MRCS (ENT) OSCE Examination. It is divided into two sections to mirror the real examination: unmanned (non-interactive) and manned (interactive) stations. A myriad of questions similar, but not identical, to those used in the actual examination is presented in this book. Some questions deliberately raise the bar, in order to stimulate learning at the next level. Clear succinct answers are provided, along with visually-enhanced revision notes to improve understanding of key concepts and to boost confidence whilst preparing for the final hurdle.
A unique feature of this book is a matching exercise on audiograms, which uncovers some of the mysteries in Clinical Audiology. All of the contributors have successfully gone through the DO-HNS OSCE event, hence they are in an ideal position to offer a wealth of sound advice and top tips. As a LAT Registrar, Mr Persaud was actually involved in the original pilot mock DO-HNS OSCE Examination in 2003 at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has followed the changes in the exam ever since. Both Professor Pau and Mr Persaud are Consultant ENT Surgeons with considerable experience in 'separating the wheat from the chaff' when it comes to teaching and writing.
This book is invaluable not only to those studying for DO-HNS/MRCS (ENT) diplomas, but also other ENT trainees in the UK and abroad who desire a quantum leap in their understanding of the fundamental principles of Otolaryngology. Consultants ENT Surgeons or equivalent may also find the content helpful to update their theoretical knowledge base of Otolaryngology and the format of the DO-HNS OSCE examination.
